On the floor are tools for hairdressing, especially combs. Many different kinds of combs were used in Japanese hairdressing.
Because women’s hair styles were becoming quite complicated, professional hairdressers for women started to emerge in the latter half of the Edo Period (1603-1868). By the Meiji Period (1868-1912), they came to the housewife’s house some two to three times a week.
To make the elaborate hairstyles possible, women needed to grow their hair extremely long.
